Remembrance Sunday 2023

16th of November, 2023

Councillors together with Ribble Valley Mayor Mark Hindle and Mr Mark Mills Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire, the three Churches of the village, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows, Whalley Village Groups and Organisations, school children, residents and friends were all present as Revd Carmyllie held the service of Remembrance at St Marys and All Saints Whalley.

The Remembrance Service Parade followed with a procession from the church, along King Street, to the war memorial which commemorates those who lost their lives in the First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945), and subsequent conflicts.

The Act of Remembrance Service was led by Father David Yates and heard students from Oakhill, Scouts and Guides read out the list of names of the fallen after the crowd had gathered at the cenotaph to join with the laying of the wreaths and tributes from members of the community.

The Last Post was played, and two minutes silence was observed followed by the Reveille.

Hymns were sung with the church choir along with the National Anthem and prayers.

With road closures in place, to ensure a safe and sombre occasion for all who attended, without the interruption of busy traffic, Whalley Parish Council would like to thank the patience of road users and the Neighbourhood Police who assisted with the stopping of traffic at 11am around the cenotaph, which was managed by Kays Highways Ltd.

Thanks to ‘Whalley Remembers History Group’ and ‘Whalley In Bloom’ who decorated the Old Grammar School in Remembrance at the War Memorial site with stunning flowing poppies and to everyone that came to mark this poignant event.

A very fitting and moving tribute.
