The Whalley Conservation Area protects the historic heart of our beautiful village - the streets, buildings, and green spaces that make Whalley such a special place to live and visit. It helps to preserve the charm and character that generations of residents have cared for and enjoyed.
Our Heritage
Whalley's story is told through its remarkable buildings and landmarks, including:
- Whalley Abbey - the remains of a 14th-century monastery and a peaceful riverside setting.
- The Gatehouse - a striking medieval gateway that has welcomed visitors for centuries.
- The Old Grammar School - a proud reminder of Whalley's long-standing commitment to learning.
- King Street - with its traditional shops and cottages that give the village its distinctive, historic feel.
These treasured places - along with many others - remind us of Whalley's historic past and the importance of caring for it as our shared heritage.
Looking After Our Village
Whalley Parish Council holds a monthly planning meeting to review and comment on planning applications within the parish. Everyone is welcome to attend and take an interest in how our village continues to evolve. If you have specific planning questions, please contact the Planning Department at Ribble Valley Borough Council (RVBC) directly.
Because Whalley is a conservation area, any alterations or improvements to buildings must be in keeping with the local character and help preserve the village's special appearance.
Here are a few simple guidelines:
- Tree works: must be notified to the Local Planning Authority (LPA) before starting.
- Windows and doors: should be replaced like for like in wood where possible.
- Colours and finishes: should blend harmoniously with neighbouring properties and features.
- Shops and businesses: should ensure signage and A-boards are sympathetic to the setting.
The Parish Council is always happy to work with residents and business owners to achieve projects that both meet individual needs and protect what makes Whalley unique.
